Pregnancy Accommodations Steps

  1. Discuss your condition with your medical provider to best understand how your condition may impact you.
  2. Determine what related needs or barriers you may encounter within the academic environment, such as the time it takes to complete tasks or assignments, etc. If existing options or informal arrangements are available, it is recommended that it be documented by all parties.
  3. For student-specific accommodations through Equal Opportunity, complete the Access & Equity: EO Pregnancy Request

Student Specific Accommodations:

Equal Opportunity can assist in determining and providing reasonable adjustments to pregnant Individuals, including, but not limited to:

  • Class absence support
  • Requesting an incomplete in a course when applicable and appropriate
  • Physical adjustments within a classroom, such as a larger desk
  • Lactation adjustments
  • Academic adjustments

Leave:

The University has various options for students to be able to take time during pregnancy and care 

  • Students may elect to take a leave of absence from the University prior to classes beginning.
  • Student may elect to withdrawal during the current semester.
  • Students may elect to do a course load reduction during the semester through Student Health Service.
  • EO can assist with absences adjustments due to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions when absences are deemed medically necessary.

Student Rights:

  • Title IX prohibits a school from discriminating against a student based on the student's pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, or recovery from any of these conditions.
    • Discrimination may include but is not limited to, preventing a pregnant or parenting individual from opportunity or access to educational or occupational programs or endeavors.
    • Prohibits a school from applying any rule related to a student's parental, family, or marital status that treats students differently based on their sex.
    • Requires institutions to provide the same special services to a pregnant/parenting student that it provides to students with  temporary medical conditions.
